The Islands of Chaldea

How are you supposed to  turn into a Wise Woman if your power just won't show up?

The brand new and final novel from the magical and whimsical pen of ‘the Godmother of Fantasy’, Diana Wynne Jones; co-authored with her sister Ursula Jones.

Aileen was supposed to grow up magical – just like the other women in her family. Unfortunately, she’s just found out that the magic seems to have skipped a generation… but that’s not her biggest problem right now.

In her world, there are four Islands of Chaldea. The largest and most magical island has been cut off from the other three for decades – and is slowly draining the magic from them.

But now a prophecy has come to light. Someone from Aileen’s island will gather a man from each of the three islands, bring down the magical barrier, and unite them with the fourth island again. And according to the king, that someone is Aileen’s Aunt – who insists on dragging Aileen along. AND the boy Aileen is sure she’ll marry (one day); AND the local boy with more brawn then brain. Someone seems to want to stop them too… someone with an interest in keeping the Islands apart. But still, with magic on their side, nothing can go wrong. Right? (less)

Porridge is my Aunt Beck's answer to everything. The morning after my initiation proved to  be such a complete failure, she  gave me porridge with cream and honey-an unheard-of luxury in our little stone house-and I was almost too upset to enjoy it. I sat shivering and my teeth chattered, as much with misery as with cold, and pushed the stuff about with  my spoon, until Aunt Beck wrapped me in a big  fluffy plaid and told me sharply that it was not the end of the world.

"Or not yet," she added."And your pigtail is a;most in the honey."

This made me sit up a ittle . Yesterday I had washed my hair in cold spring water full of  herbs - washed all over in it as well- and  it was not  an experience I wanted to repeat. I had gone without food too all day  before that dreadful washing, with the result that I felt damp and chilly all over, and tender as a snail's when the time came for me to go down into the Place. And I hadn't got any drier or warmer as the night went on

How are you supposed to  turn into a Wise Woman if your power just won't show up?

Aileen is convinced she'll never become as magical as her Aunt Beck. But then her aunt is set a mission. She must go to the enemy island  of  Logra, locked away  behind its invisible barrier  in the sea. and rescue the kidnapped Prince from the enemy.

Aileen and her aunt set off on their fantastic journey, recruiting  an outlandish crew on the way. But Alieen is about to  discover that she could be  more important than she realises. Perhaps it is her, above all, who is being drawn to Logra, and for a very special purpose...
